One of the good features of yahoo messenger is the archive viewer. Yahoo records all the instant messages, conferences, texts and stores them in archives within the hard disk. All the archive files are stored inside Yahoo!MessengerProfilesuser id folder. These archives are structured by buddy user ids. There are 3 main folders in here for Messages, Conferences and Mobile Messages. Within the messages folder there is a sub folder created for every buddy id with which the user has had any conversation. Each archive file inside this folder has a date stamp as part of the filename like 20100625-userid.dat.
One drawback of the archive viewer is that you have to be online and logged into yahoo to view your archives. This means you can’t see any other user’s archives. The archives are stored as .dat file extensions and they encoded with a XOR algorithm. Therefore, you can’t read the layout the archives. There can be situations where you may need the archived messages or chats for your reference. Also, in cases when you forget password, archives can be helpful to retrieve important contact information or email IDs. People also like to view their kids, spouse or employees chat for personal reasons where archives can help.
The question is how; the structure of archives is not readable. You need a Yahoo archive reader. Use Yahoo archive decoder software to decode every data with the DAT files and read every chat, message or text done from that system. Back in the day, it was ICQ that lead the IM craze and today Microsoft rules that roost with MSN Messenger, but Yahoo! has added a lot of interesting features to its instant messenger contender, one of which we liked a lot: Yahoo's Cam-to-Cam video chat feature (pictured here).
The client looks pretty good, but we found it slow to say the least. The layout is clean and organized and easy to get around in.
The messenger also features voice mail which is pretty cool. When you're not around, friends can leave you messages so you can get back to them.. though not a viable replacement for real voicemail, but it does actually support leaving voice messages for retrieval on certain types of smartphone.
Like all real messenger clients, Yahoo! messenger also supports filesharing, so sending music or pictures to your family in Europe or Asia is as easy as a few mouse clicks.
Everything we tested on Yahoo! messenger was free, so no reason not to give it a try.
